Chapter Projects and Activities

Welcome Week Move-In
The first service project of the year for SHSU CKI is Welcome Week Move In. During this time CKI members help students move into the dorms on Campus.

CKI 101 - Introduction to Circle K...
is an orientation program that introduces potential members to different facets of SHSU CKI. Traditionally, CKI 101 begins at Austin Hall on our campus (pictured above). It is an open event and all SHSU students are welcome to attend. The event normally begins with a social period with food and fun and then ends with a short meeting with speakers from our community.

Rita B. Huff Animal Shelter
Twice a week the members of CKI visit the Rita B. Huff Humane Society to play with some friends. These cuties look forward to our visits so they can be free from the confines of their cages.

If you are interested  in this project please contact us for times and dates of projects at Rita B. Huff. You can also find dates for projects on our yahoo group.

SAAFE House
The SAAFE House is a shelter for battered women and children. Our members occupy the children while the mothers are in counseling.

Mentor Program
To children, mentoring means having a trusted friend who cares about them and listens to them, a role model they can look up to, who will help them achieve their dreams.

SHSU CKI members are involved with the Mentor Program in the Huntsville School District.

Fair on the Square
The Fair on the Square is an annual event that takes place during October in downtown Huntsville. Booths traditionally have been placed along the sidewalks of downtown streets. There is food and fun for people of all ages. The Kiwanis Club of Huntsville normally has a booth and Circle K  members assist by working along with Kiwanians.

Reading is Fundamental
RIF (Reading is Fundamental) is a program that encourages children to read. It is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club in Huntsville. All 3rd Grade students in Huntsville are bused to the Huntsville Public Library to pick out books.

These books are purchased by the Kiwanis Club and are distributed to the youth three times a year. Members of the SHSU CKI Chapter assist in the distribution of these books at the library.

Sam Houston Folk Festival
The General Sam Houston Folk Festival takes place on the third weekend in April at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum Complex. It is a celebration of life and times of General Sam Houston.

Life-skill demonstrations, authentic 19th century dress, continuous entertainment, hands-on children’s activities and more! CKI has a booth at this event where we paint children’s faces.

Green Acres Nursing Home
For over 30 years CKI member from the SHSU Chapter of CKI have been visiting Green Acres Nursing Home. We hold weekly bingo tournaments for the elderly and on occasion celebrate birthdays.

Good Shepard Mission
The Good Shepard Mission provides food, clothing, and temporary shelter to indigent locals and transients by:

  • Serving two hot meals daily
  • Operating the local food bank
  • Offering two Thrift Stores for low cost shopping or vouchers for free clothing.
    Also available is free counseling.
  • Other services include providing limited prescription and travel-aid vouchers.

Fall Retreat
Tired of  pop quiz and exams? Then this event is right up your alley. Fall Retreat is a weekend designed for you to get away from it all!

This weekend event focuses on team building exercises and leadership opportunities. It is a great chance to create new friendships with people from across Texas and Oklahoma.

SHSU CKI members and members of other chapters from around the T-O District gather each fall for this fun weekend. Come join us.

T-O District Convention
District Convention is a time for fun and celebration. It allows us time to reflect on the past year and get back together with the friends we have made during the past year.

Through the course of the convention, members will elect a new governor, district secretary, and district treasurer. Some workshops are also being planned. There is recognition for chapters and officers that have excelled during the past year. Not to mention the scholarships that are give out by Kiwanis!
