2016 Drum Majors

Cameron Price

Cameron graduated from McKinney Boyd High School in the spring of 2013 where he served as a Drum Major during his junior and senior years. He is now a senior at SHSU majoring in Music Education and is a member of Tau Beta Sigma. He is a French Horn student under Peggy DeMers and has been a member of the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Old Main Brass Choir, Horn Studio, Angry Orange Brass Band, and the Bearkat Marching Band. This will be his fourth year in the BMB, and his third year as a Drum Major. Cameron plans to graduate in spring 2018 and pursue his band directing career.

 

Edith Saucedo

Edith graduated in the spring of 2013 from Cypress Ridge High School in Houston Tx, where she served as drum major her junior and senior years. She will be a senior at SHSU in the fall of 2016 and is currently majoring in Music Education. She is a clarinet student under Patricia Card and has been a member of the SHSU Symphonic Band, Clarinet Studio, Clarinet Choir, and Clarinet Quartet. Eith is also a current, first-year member of Sigam Alpha Iota, an all women's International Music Fraternity. This is her fourth year as a member of the Bearkat Marching Band and her second year as a drum major for the BMB. Edith plans to graduate in the spring of 2018, begin her teaching career as a band director and ultimately pursue a master’s degree in instrumental conducting.

 

Gabriel Rodriguez

Gabriel Rodriguez graduated in 2014 from John B. Alexander High School in Laredo, TX where he served as Trumpet Section leader during his junior year and sole Drum Major during his senior year.  This fall, Gabriel will be enrolled as a Junior Music Education Major at Sam Houston State University, studying Trumpet with Professor Adamas, Professor Warkentin, and Dr. Pepping.  Gabriel has participated in multiple ensembles, including the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Old Main Brass Choir, Trumpet studio ensembles, and the Bearkat Marching Band.  This is his third year in the Bearkat Marching Band and his first year as a drum major.  Previously, he served as a Trumpet Music Tech for the BMB during his sophomore year and was awarded Music Tech of the Year.  Outside of his academic endeavors, he volunteers for work in the community.  Gabriel plans to graduate in the fall of 2019, become a director of bands for high school and eventually further his education with graduate studies in intrumental conducting.

2016 Student Assistants

 

Malorie Hegemeyer

Malorie graduated from Waller High School in the spring of 2013, having served as a student leader in her band program. A flute student of Kathy Daniel, Malorie has performed with various chamber ensembles, Flute Choir, Symphonic Band, and the Bearkat Marching Band. She served as a visual tech for the flute section in her second year with the BMB. Malorie is a senior at Sam Houston and is working towards a degree in Music Education. She was initiated into Sigma Alpha Iota, an international music fraternity for women, in the spring of 2014 and is in her second term of office as Vice President - Membership. She plans to graduate in the fall of 2017 and begin her career as an Elementary school teacher.

Adam Robertson

Adam Robertson is a senior at Sam Houston State University. He is working on a bachelor of science degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Forensic Anthropology. This will be Adam's fourth year in the Bearkat Marching Band and his first year as Student Assistant. During his first two years Adam was a member of the drumline, playing bottom bass both years. Adam genuinely enjoys meeting new people, is incredibly outgoing and cannot wait to meet new BMB members!

 

John Zellar

John Zellar graduated from Rice High School in the spring of 2014.  He served as drum major at RHS for three years.  Now a junior Music Educaton major, John studies saxophone with Dr. Masahito Sugihara.  John is in his third year with the BMB, having served as a Visual Tech for one year prior to becoming a Student Assistan this year.  He has been a member of the SHSU Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band, Saxophone Ensemble, and Saxophone Studio.  John is a Terry Scholar and an active member of Tau Beta Sigma and Phi Mu Alpha.  He plans to graduate in the spring of 2018 with a degree in Music Education, pursue a career as a band director, and eventually continue with graduate studies in conducting.

 

Katie Knight

Katie graduated in the Spring of 2014 from McKinney Boyd High School where she held leadership positions for two years. This is her third year in the Bearkat marching band. She served as the baritone music tech this past marching season and loved every moment. Katie is a Music Education major here at SHSU. She is a student of Dr. Henry Howey and has been a member of the Wind Ensemble, the Tuba/ Euphonium studio, and a proud member of the Bearkat Marching band! She also serves as the principal euphonium player in the Old Main Brass Choir. Katie is an officer of Tau Beta Sigma, a National Honorary Band Sorority. She intends to graduate in the Fall of 2018 and eventually go to graduate school to refine her skills as a musician and teacher.

Dominique McCray

Dominique McCray is a junior at Sam Houston State where he is pursuing a Bachelors of Music Education. A native of Houston, TX, Dominique is an alum of J. Frank Dobie High School, where he served as Drum Major for the Longhorn Marching Band. While attending Sam Houston State, Dominique has held several major leadership positions, such as Vice President for the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, Visual Tech for the BMB, and currently Student Assistant for the BMB. In addition to his high school and college experiences, Dominique served as the Drum Major for the Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps in 2015. Studying  flute student under Kathy Daniel, Dominique has had the opportunity to perform with several chamber and large ensembles while attending Sam Houston, including Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Flute Choir, and the Bearkat Marching Band.  He plans to graduate in fall of 2018 with a degree in Music Education and pursue a career teaching as a band director.

 

 


 

2016 Visual Caption Leader

 

Austin de la Rua

Austin graduated from Friendswood High School in 2014, where he served as Trumpet Section Leader for the 2012 and 2013 marching seasons. He is currently a junior at SHSU studying music education. Austin has performed in many ensembles at SHSU, including the Concert band, Symphonic band, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and the student-led Old Main Brass Choir. In the BMB, Austin served as trumpet visual section leader for the 2015 marching season, and he will serve as Visual Caption Leader, a new leadership position added to the 2016 BMB Leadership Team. Austin is also currently involved in Drum Corps International. He marched the 2014 season with the Troopers, and he marched the 2015 and 2016 season with the Blue Knights. He is incredibly excited to return to the BMB this fall with the opportunity to mold this new position of Visual Caption Leader into be something very efficient for the BMB.
