General Information
All music majors are required to receive academic advisement each semester. Entering students must receive an academic advisement before they can register.
Music majors (with one exception—see below) are normally advised in the SAM Center by Dr. Wayne Barrett. The SAM Center does not make appointments but will provide inquirers with the days and hours that Dr. Barrett is available. If a student must be advised on a day or at a time that Dr. Barrett is not available, a general advisor at the SAM Center can also provide an advisement. The phone number for the SAM Center is 936-294-4444.
Music Therapy students are normally advised by Professor Karen Miller, Director of the Music Therapy program. Since she does not usually teach during the summer, music therapy majors who need advisement during the summer should meet with Dr. Barrett in the SAM Center.
Freshmen
Incoming music majors have the opportunity to receive their first academic advisement session during Freshman Orientation. Advance registration, however, actually begins in mid-spring. The result is that by the time of summer orientations, many class sections are already filled. For this reason, if a student can visit the campus and be advised prior to the summer, it is advantageous to do so.
Transfer Students
Incoming transfer students have the opportunity to receive their first academic advisement session during Transfer Student Orientation. Advance registration, however, actually begins in mid-spring. The result is that by the time of summer orientations, many class sections are already filled. For this reason, if a student can visit the campus and be advised prior to the summer, it is advantageous to do so.
