Admission Requirements for
Master of Music in Music Therapy degree

The masters program in music therapy follows Sam Houston State University's Graduate School General admission. It is recommended to submit the application before April 30 for Fall semester or November 30 for Spring semester.

Graduate Application

The graduate application is on-line. All applicants must submit their application using this on-line process.

Graduate Application Fee

The graduate application fee is paid as part of the on-line process described above. No waiver of the application fee is provided or considered.

Transcripts

Official transcripts must be submitted directly from all institutions of higher learning in which you have taken classes. This includes all post-secondary course work. Unofficial transcripts cannot be accepted. If you are in the process of completing a degree, you do not need to provide a transcript with the degree listed on it. However, you must provide a transcript that indicates the degree has been awarded once you complete the degree in progress.

Reference Letters

You must have three letters of reference submitted by people who can speak to your work in music therapy and your potential as a graduate student. The letters can be on the letterhead of the individuals providing the recommendations. The letters must be originals that are submitted by the recommenders. The letters cannot be submitted by you.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The Graduate Record Examination general test that includes a verbal score, quantitative score, and analytical writing score is required.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

The TOEFL examination is required of all foreign students who have not received a degree from an accredited college or university where the official language is English.

Writing Sample

A sample of your abilities in academic writing is required for application to this degree program. The sample could be a paper that you have previously written as part of an academic course.

Video of Music Therapy session

An example of music therapy session you conducted is required for application to this program. The example could be a therapy session with your clients and/or patients or a simulative therapy session. You are responsible for having the proper institutional and/or client release. If you apply for Master Equivalency Program, you can submit your video of music therapy session at the end of your first year in the program.
