A native of Edmond, Oklahoma, Chris Riggs received his Masters in Music from Northwestern University where he studied with She-e Wu, Michael Burritt, and James Ross. He holds degrees in both music and philosophy from Oklahoma University, where he studied with Dr. Lance Drege. As Adjunct Percussion Instructor at Sam Houston State, Chris will direct the second percussion ensemble and the Bearkat Marching Band Drumline.
Chris is quickly becoming recognized in the educational and orchestral percussion scenes across the US. Prior to his position at Sam Houston State, Chris was the percussion instructor and arranger for the Northwestern University Drumline. In Oklahoma, he served five years as the percussion caption head and arranger for the Edmond North High School. In addition, he toured with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps from 2001-2004, the last two years serving as captain.
Chris was recently appointed a substitute percussionist for the New World Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Illinois Philharmonic. As a free-lance percussionist, he has performed with Chicago-based ensembles including Third Coast Percussion, dal niente, Accessible Contemporary Music, and Sonic Inertia. Chris has also performed alongside Bob Becker, She-e Wu, and Peter Soave at Millennium Park and with Emmanuel Sejourne at the PAS International Convention with the Northwestern Percussion Ensemble.
As a composer and arranger, Chris has published works for solo marimba, chamber ensemble, and percussion ensemble with Smitty's Music and has arranged percussion for numerous marching bands and winter drumlines in Oklahoma.
