Kyle Kindred, DMA (b. 1978) is currently Assistant Professor of Music and Co-coordinator of Theory and Composition at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. A native of Arkansas City, Kansas, Kindred holds degrees from Wichita State University and The University of Texas at Austin, having studied composition with Donald Grantham, Kevin Puts, and Walter Mays. Kindred's compositions have been performed in the US, Canada, Japan, and Europe, receiving awards including Best Music at the 2006 Nevada State Marching Championship, a spot in the 2000 National Bandmasters Association's First Biennial Young Composer Mentor Project, winner of the Claude T. Smith Memorial Composition Contest in 2001, and First Prize in the National Federation of Music Clubs 2001 Victor Herbert(ASCAP) Prize in Composition.
Kindred's works have been performed by the Washburn Symphony Orchestra, the US Navy Band, the US 323rd Army Band, the St. Louis Wind Symphony, the University of Michigan Concert Band, and the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Wind Ensemble, conducted by Jack Stamp, at venues such as the 2000 National Bandmasters Association Convention, the 2001 Missouri Music Educators Association Convention, and The House of Blues in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kindred co-wrote the score for the short animated film "Cough, Cold, and High Fever," featured at the 2007 Los Angeles Film Festival and screened and broadcast around the world as part of the Live Earth Concerts for a Climate in Crisis. Kindred is a contributing author for GIA's Composers on Composing for Band, Volume 4. His work for band In Store was recorded by the TAD Wind Symphony of Japan in June of 2008.
Kindred's works have also been performed at the 2002 International Double Reed Society convention in Banff, Canada, as well as the 2003 World Saxophone Congress. Kindred was one of ten composers commissioned in 2004 by the Oregon Bach Festival Composer Symposium to write new works in honor of George Crumb on his 75th birthday. As a pianist, Kindred's performances and recordings of new works for solo piano have been heard on the radio in Dallas, New York City, and Australia. He has been active as keyboardist for the UT New Music Ensemble, UT Wind Ensemble, the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra, Nexus Chamber Orchestra, and the Lonestar Wind Orchestra of Dallas, as well as writing scores for award-winning Austin-produced plays and films.
