Denise Eaton has taught high school choir for twenty-nine years: twelve as the Assistant at Sam Rayburn High School and seventeen as the Head Choral Director at Spring High School. Choirs under her direction have appeared six times at TMEA and SWACDA conventions. Chamber Choirs under her direction have won the prestigious American Classic Madrigal and Chamber Choir Festival an unprecedented six times.
A graduate of Clear Lake High School, Eaton earned the Bachelor of Music Degree in Education from the University of Texas at Austin with an emphasis in piano and voice. She has extensive post-graduate studies at the University of Houston Moore’s School of Music and Sam Houston State University where she will complete the M.M. in Choral Conducting in December, 2011.
Eaton has served TMEA as Region Vocal Chairman, Area Vocal Chair, Convention Facilities Organizer, All-State Section Leader, All-State Treble Choir Organizer, Vice-President and Vocal Chairman, and President. Eaton is currently the sitting Immediate Past-President of TMEA. She has also served on the UIL Sight-Reading Selection and Prescribed Music List Committees.
Awarded the 1998 UIL Sponsor Excellence Award, Eaton was selected as Spring High School’s 2004 Teacher of the year. A multiple nominee of Who’s Who Among High School Teachers, Eaton has been honored to receive the coveted SISD Most Outstanding Educator having been chosen by a top 5 percent graduate of Spring High School.
An active clinician and conductor, Eaton has conducted over twenty-five Texas Region Choirs, the 2010 Northwest Arkansas Region Choir, the 2002 Arkansas All-State Treble Choir and the 2007 ACDA Louisiana All-State Treble Choir. Known for her innovative teaching styles, she is highly sought after to present workshops and lectures; she has presented over forty workshops in Texas, Georgia and Alabama. 2011 marks the second year Mrs. Eaton has presented choral workshops for the Institute for Educational Development at Sam Houston State University.
Eaton has written and published the SMART (Sight Reading Made Accessible Readable and Teachable) and SMART Minor Sight Reading books. Currently, she is the Choral Editor for Carl Fischer Music Publication, LLC and BriLee Music Company. Her teaching duties at Sam Houston State University include conducting the Women’s Choir and teaching methods classes.
