Summer Workshops for Band Directors
The Center for Music Education is committed to sponsoring development sessions for practicing teachers at the secondary level. These two workshops will be available for continuing education credit and will offer insights from outstanding educators and musicians.
The Art of Teaching Music
June 13-16, 2011
This comprehensive event brings together teachers, performers and students to explore teaching at the highest levels. Instrument pedagogy, ensemble rehearsal, advocacy, musicianship and technology will all be addressed. Participants may select offerings from all tracks. This is an intense, exciting, practical and inspiring experience for both new and veteran teachers.
New Teachers
June 13-16, 2011
One of the tracks in The Art of Teaching Music will focus on recent graduates who are beginning a teaching career. This is an ideal way to prepare for your first year to teach and to begin a successful career.
Teaching the Middle School Band
June 20-23, 2011
A workshop designed to explore all aspects of teaching the middle school band. The presentations are organized in tracks that focus on beginning pedagogy, creating success in the bands and technology. . All aspects of teaching in a successful program will be shared by highly successful Texas teachers.

Earn SBEC Approved Professional Education Credit
The workshop includes Professional Education Credit approved by the State Board for Educator Certification.
This credit counts towards teacher certificate renewal. All attendees will receive a certificate detailing number of clock hours (28-36 hours), content, etc.
Earn graduate credit
(applicable towards a Masters Degree in Music at SHSU)
Start work on a Masters Degree in Music. Sam Houston State University offers masters degrees in:
- Conducting
- Performance
- Musicology
- Composition
