The Sam Houston State University Center for Music Education and the Young Educator Seminars at Southern Methodist University are collaborating on a workshop for band directors offered this summer entitled “The Art of Teaching Music”. The workshop will be held on June 17, 18, and 19 at the Meadows School of the Arts on the SMU campus in Dallas.
This comprehensive event brings together teachers, performers and students to explore teaching at the highest levels. Instrument pedagogy, ensemble rehearsal, advocacy, musicianship and technology will all be addressed. Participants may select offerings from all tracks. This is an intense, exciting, practical and inspiring experience for both new and veteran teachers.
Presenters include Eugene Migliaro Corporon, Director of Wind Studies at the University of North Texas, John Whitwell, Director of Bands Emeritus at Michigan State University, Tom Shine, Director of Bands, retired, at Duncanville High School, Bill Watson, Director of Fine Arts in the Lewisville ISD, Amanda Drinkwater, Director of Bands at Marcus High School, Lynne Jackson, Music Education at SMU, Reagan Brumley, Director of Bands at Highland Park High School, Sarah Allen, Assistant Professor of Music Education at SMU, Matthew McInturf, Director of Bands at SHSU, and Brian Merrill, Music Education at SMU.
A special feature of the workshop is instrument pedagogy featuring Doug Howard, Principal Percussionist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Scott Plugge, Professor of Saxophone and Director of the School of Music at SHSU, Nathan Koch Assistant Professor of Bassoon at SHSU, and Lynne Jackson, Music Education at SMU.
There are also sessions designed specifically for recent graduates preparing to start teaching. A highlight of the “New Teachers” track is getting to work on the podium with high school students and receiving feedback from workshop faculty. This is an ideal way to begin a successful career.
The schedule will run from 9:00 am until 6:30 pm on June 17 and 18, and 9:00 am – 4:30 pm on June 19. SMU is a provider of Continuing Professional Education credit and 23 hours of CPE credit may be earned.
Registration is done through Sam Houston State University. The cost is $250.
