MM in Choral Conducting – Audition Information
Auditions for the graduate program in choral conducting will be held Wednesday, March 5 from 1:00-4:00. The audition for entrance into the program will consist of two parts outlined below.
I. Audition with Chorale
1. You are to prepare mm. 1-53 of the folksong “I Love My Love” by Gustave Holst. The choir will know the piece, so simply conduct from the beginning to m. 53 with no stops. This is not an opportunity to stop and work with the ensemble, instead, we will be interested in seeing how you connect with them on a piece with which they are familiar.
2. Prepare an assigned selection, which will be sent to the candidate via email. The choir will have a cursory knowledge of the score: pitches, rhythm, and text. You will be given 6-8 minutes to work with them on the piece. Your work should include, but is not limited to, presenting musical ideas and addressing mistakes you hear.
II. Interview
Following the audition with the choir, each candidate will meet with the Director of Choral Activities for a test of one’s skill set and a brief interview. Both components of the skills set test will be emailed to the candidate.
Skills Set Test:
1. Conduct mm. 1 – 52 of Benjamin Britten’s “Festival Te Deum”
- Perform all Hindemith exercises in the prescribed key and tempo. The top line should be sung while the bottom line is clapped.
Following the skills set test, we will discuss you and your interest in the program.
In addition to the audition, you must apply to and meet the admissions standards for the SHSU graduate program as well as the School of Music. Forms and information may be found online. (http://www.shsu.edu/~music/admissions/gradstudies/)
