Summary
The Jazz & Improvisation Camp is designed to give students a highly positive experience with the fundamentals of jazz and improvisation based on the aural tradition of blues and swing.
- "The Blues," call & response melodies, and rhythm exercises practiced with professional recordings.
- Exercises in ornamenting jazz melodies.
- Four step rhythm exercises.
- Hearing and playing major and minor "key centers" as related to the idiomatic ii-V-I jazz chord progression.
- Listening / watching vintage jazz footage / audio recordings of respected jazz artists to assimilate and develop a jazz model for one's specific instrument in terms of sound, style, and language.
- Learn and assimilate jazz language "licks" by transcribing music.
- Performance in a jazz ensemble.
Afternoon & Night Activities
Afternoon and night activities will vary day-to-day. Activities will include:
- movie night
- a dance
- time in the University game room
- other activities as announced
Faculty
The campers are taught by Sam Houston faculty Prof. Aric Schneller, Dr. Scott Plugge, and others.
Auditions
There is no audition required for this camp.
Performance
The last day of the camp will feature a performance (at time to be determined). The camp will be officially concluded at the end of the concert.
