Problem Solving Carnival 2006
Texas Section MAA Problem Solving Carnival
When: Thursday, April 6 from 7 pm - 9 pm
Where: Ballroom of the Holiday Inn
General Information:
Undergraduate students from each college or university attending the section meeting are invited to enter a team to compete in this problem solving competition. Twenty teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Institutions may enter more than one team; however, a second or third team from an institution will be accepted pending full accommodation to institutions that only enter one team.
Each team will have 2-5 members and each team member will be given a set of problems. No calculators will be allowed. When a team solves a problem, one member will take the team's solution to the carnival events line. The first person in the carnival events line will select an event such as throwing a dart at a board filled with balloons, throwing a ball into a hoop, etc.
If the team member is unsuccessful in the carnival event, he or she must move to the back of the line. A different team member can replace the member at the end of the line but only one member from each team can stand in the line at any given time.
If a team member is successful in the carnival event, he or she will take the team's solution to the judge. The judge will award 8 points for the first correct solution, 7 points for the second correct solution, 6 for the third, etc. After 8 teams have solved a problem, that problem will be retired.
The top 8 teams will compete in a final round with a second set of problems. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 teams.
To enter a team, send an email to joel.schmitter@mwsu.edu. Include in the email the names of all team members (first and last) as well as the affiliated university or college. If there are any individuals who wish to participate but do not have a team, they may send an email (above address) requesting to be placed on a team with others in the same situation. We will do our best to accommodate individuals without a team.
