Dan Teague - Connecting High School and College Mathematics

Abstract:      The transition from high school mathematics to collegiate mathematics has long been a topic of concern in the mathematics community.  Smoothing this transition is a shared responsibility of high school and university faculty.  In the last decade, the high school curriculum has come under immense pressure from the deleterious effects of an increasingly test driven educational system, from the explosive growth of Advanced Placement courses, and from the necessity of a higher level of  mathematical competence in the general population.  The result can be a distortion of the taught curriculum that makes the transition to college more problematic.  Our most talented high school students, the future mathematicians, scientists, and engineers, face special problems related to these issues.

Service is always an important component of the university faculty’s responsibilities.  Depending upon the particular tenure and promotion guidelines for your school, supporting secondary education and aiding your local schools as they address the issues noted about could be an important part of that service requirement.  In this session we will discuss opportunities for applying your talent and expertise usefully to address these concerns.

Jennifer McLoud-Mann - Bringing Historic or Current Events in the Classroom

Abstract:
Looking for a way to spice up your classes?  Generate class discussion?  Recruit math majors?  I will discuss ways that I have used historic or current events in the classroom.  Bring your ideas to this session - I hope that we can have a great discussion!
