Title:
Outreach and Retention: A Way to Find Your Fit as New Faculty

Abstract:  Recruiting and retention is a key focus of administration, and this provides an opportunity for new faculty to get plugged into the department and get noticed for all the right reasons. New faculty members have a perspective closer to that of current majors and even potential majors. We will discuss ways new faculty can use their newness to their advantage by immediately contributing to their department through outreach and recruiting. In particular, we will discuss web pages, talks at schools, building public school connections, math days, math clubs, advising, and faculty/student projects.

Jennifer Quinn, University of Washington, Tacoma

Title:
Making and Keeping Connections

Abstract: Congratulations. By committing to the TX Project NExT Fellows you have taken a critical step in building a professional network that will serve you well throughout your career. As with all relationships, finding and maintaining
strong, productive connections takes work. In this session, we will strategize on connections to foster mathematical collaborations, to seek interdisciplinary applications, to promote pedagogical themes, and to tie together teaching and research in meaningful ways.

Tim Chartier, Davidson College

Title:  Engaging students mathematically - pitch by pitch

Abstract: Pitching can play an important role in engaging students -- pitching ideas, that is.  This talk will reflect on my experiences (both successful and challenging) in presenting students with ideas that engage them in and out of the classroom. We will discuss student work that includes scholarly research, expository writing and service to the community.  During the presentation, the focus will transition from my past to envisioning your future.
