Title:
Proposal Writing and Funding Opportunities in the Mathematical Sciences at the National Science Foundation

Abstract:  Participants will learn about writing proposals to the National Science Foundation including how to incorporate students as well as some common proposal writing pitfalls.  Specific NSF programs that may be of particular interest to the participants will be discussed, however the participants will be able to discuss any issue regarding NSF, NSF funding or any myths that they may have heard about NSF, in an informal setting.

David Kung, St. Mary's College of Maryland

Title: Moving From “Learning to Teach” to “Teaching to Learn”

Abstract: Teaching college mathematics involves a fair amount of learning on the job. Without the years of preparation that high school teachers go through, we are forced to pick things up on the fly, learning to teaching while we’re teaching. In this workshop we’ll explore how you can do that more effectively, structuring your interactions with students in ways that will help you build on your knowledge of student thinking. Doing so transforms your classroom into a place where you are “teaching to learn,” teaching in ways that help you learn how to teach.

Francis Edward Su, Harvey Mudd College

Title: Designing Undergraduate Research Projects

Abstract: Undergraduate research seems to be popluar these days, but how do you do it? Why do research with undergradautes? What makes a good project? Where do you find problems? I'll give you my perspective on these questions and we can have a discussion.
