"Engaging Your Student Body Through Activities"

Abstract: In this talk we will discuss various activities in the mathematics department that one can use to engage the mathematics majors as well as reaching other majors such as engineering, chemistry, and computer science. The activities discussed with be events that can be sponsored by your local math club.

"Research Opportunities for Undergraduates"

Abstract: This talk will be a discussion of my own experiences with REUs and research with undergraduate students over the past few years. In general these programs provide an introduction to mathematical research for undergraduates and cover a multitude of topics. In my program the instructors focused on Discrete Mathematics and computing, and lectures given by the instructors attempted to motivate and augment student research. Each student selected an area of research, became an expert in that area, completed an extensive survey, and reported formally and informally on their progress regularly. Our daily group meetings included formal presentations, discussions on technical writing, and constructive feedback on presentations and written reports.
