Multicultural Awarness Certification Program

What is Multicultural Awareness Certification?

Multicultural Awareness Certification (M.A.C.) is a program that is unique to Sam Houston State University.  Students, faculty, staff, and members of the surrounding community are eligible to receive this certification.

Certification may be achieved in one of the following ways:

1) Attend a full day of diversity training and awareness workshops during the annual Diversity Leadership Conference, which is hosted on the campus of Sam Houston State University every spring semester. 

2) Volunteer for a minimum of five programs hosted by the office of Multicultural and International Student Services each semester. 

3) Attend  three MAC Qualified campus programs. A list of these programs are available on the MSS website as well as in the Student Activities Office.

Defining Multicultural Education:

Multicultural education is a progressive approach for transforming education that holistically critiques and addresses current shortcomings, failings, and discriminatory practices in education. It is grounded in ideals of social justice, education equity, and a dedication to facilitating educational experiences in which all students reach their full potential as learners and as socially aware and active beings, locally, nationally, and globally. Multicultural education acknowledges that schools are essential to laying the foundation for the transformation of society and the elimination of oppression and injustice. What is the importance of Multiculturalism  in Higher Education:

The collegiate campus is the prime institution to facilitate the development of the holistic person. As an institution our University wants to equip its students with the knowledge, life and soft skills needed to be successful in a diverse world. A collegiate campus should induce conversation and dialogue while broadening the student’s self reference criteria. The object diversity, social justice, and multicultural education is not to destroy student morals and values but to enhance them through knowledge, tolerance and acceptance.

What you will gain form completing this program:

Students: SHSU students will game knowledge and skills that will support them on their journey towards success in our diverse world. Employers are seeking well rounded individuals who can adapt and be productive locally, nationally, and globally. This certification will enhance your resume as well give you life experiences to apply to your personal journey. Regardless of your field of study you will benefit greatly from this program.

Faculty/Staff: As educators and practitioners it is imperative that we constantly study our students and our surroundings so that we may effectively teach and serve them. Gaining knowledge through programs concentrated on diversity and multicultural issues will affirm your commitment to producing stellar citizens and leaders.
