Veterinary (PVET)

Academic Preparation for Admission into Texas Veterinary Programs

There are 28 accredited schools and colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States, four Canadian colleges of veterinary medicine, three veterinary medical education institutions, and six international veterinary schools coordinated by the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, www.aavmc.org.   Only one veterinary medical program occurs in Texas, the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A & M University.

Veterinary medical schools do no require a specific academic major or an emphasis in agricultural studies, rather they are looking quality students showing scholarship in concert with a demonstrated interest and skill for veterinary medicine.  Some programs accept students without a baccalaureate degree; however most recommend completion of an undergraduate program.  The choice of a major and minor may be freely selected, most successful veterinary medical students major in one of the natural science disciplines;  all natural science courses selected and / or required by the professional school must be those taken by science majors.

Substantial experience with animals is required, and applicants must demonstrate knowledge of animal health care needs. Experience should be broad and deep, and should entail more than having provided routine rearing and feeding of companion animals or family pets. Applicants should engage in an array of activities that show an appreciation for and understanding of the duties and responsibilities of a veterinarian and the scope of the veterinary medical profession. The requirement for animal, veterinary and biomedical science experience is a minimum of 180 hours (4.5 weeks) at the time of application. Admitted students have an average of 2,500 to 3,000 hours of veterinary-related experience, which includes working with veterinarians.

Serious students seeking career opportunities in the field of Veterinary Medicine should seek advisement from the Office of Medical & Allied Health Programs.  The specialized sequence of coursework meets basic prerequisite needs of the Texas veterinary medical program as well as the other veterinary medical programs within the scope of a generalized natural science major and minor.  This approach provides the greatest flexibility for alternative strategies should they be necessary.

The pre-veterinary medical curriculum listed here serves to as a guide for a biology major / chemistry minor.  Other academic majors and minors can be used, but may require more coursework than the usual 120-hour baccalaureate.
