How to Qualify to Get Registration
Approval for the Secondary ELAR TExES Exam
Authorization for Registration. To register for the TExES, you must contact Kim McClerran in the TExES office in the SHSU education program. In order to be cleared to register, you need authorization from Dr Hanson. Before Dr Hanson will sign your authorization for registration, you must attend a workshop and take the 8-12 ELAR pre-test.
Your authorization to take the TExES will depend on several factors
Taking all these factors into account, Dr Hanson will determine whether you are authorized to take the secondary ELAR TExES. This is a question of judgment, not a mathematical formula, but here’s an example of how it will work. The threshold for “passing” the pre-test is 70 percent. If you had a “C” in English 464, average or below grades in education courses, and middling scores on the mid-term and final exams, you must make at least 75 on the pre-test before you will be allowed authorization to register for the TExES. If you made an “A” in 464, with high exam scores and strong grades in education courses, you will only need to make 70 or better on the pre-test. (Even if you score lower than that, you might be allowed to take the test after some remediation.) In other words, whether you are allowed to take the TExES is a judgment, but it is one that uses standardized guidelines to make decisions about individuals and their performance. The size of our program permits us to personalize this process, and that is how we will proceed. If you are not authorized to take the TExES at first, we will set up a program of remediation that will hopefully get you up to speed to do better on your re-take of the pre-test.
