Danny McDaniel

Director

DANNY MCDANIEL is the Director of the Lowman Student Center. He previously served as the Assistant Director of the Lowman Student Center for Facilities and Operations at Sam Houston State University from January 2003 until November 2005. Prior to working at SHSU, he was an active duty Marine for 28 years attaining the rank of colonel before retiring. His last two assignments were as the Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, California and Chief of Staff, Marine Corps Air Bases Western Area, Miramar, California. He is a member of the Marines Memorial Association, Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps Association, Military Officers Association, Huntsville Verterans Affairs Advisory Committee, and Association of College Unions-International. He is currently Chairing the Military Memorial Committee at Sam Houston State University.

James Van Roekel

James Van Roekel

Associate Director

JAMES VAN ROEKEL is the Associate Director of the Lowman Student Center. He has lived in Huntsville and has worked at SHSU for over 11 years as a faculty member and administrator in Academic Affairs. He received his BA in History and Religion from the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota, his MA in History from the University of South Dakota, and his MLS (Library Science) from Emporia State University in Kansas. His research, which can be found in 16 publications including two books, and teaching focus on the investigation of the utilization of free and off-the-shelf hardware and software towards the development of multimedia and digital applications in student learning and web-based broadcasting. His grant writing has brought over $700,000.00 to the University to engage faculty and students in current and emerging technologies. He is a member of EDUCAUSE and ACUI. James is a past recipient of the Sammy Award.

Rueben Pena

Rueben Pena

Operations Coordinator

RUEBEN PENA is the Operations Coordinator at the Lowman Student Center. His primary responsibility is to coordinate the day to day operations of the Kat Klub Entertainment Center on the 1st floor of the LSC, but includes other objectives. Originally from the Corpus Christi area, he has been a member of the Sam Houston State University community since 2004 when he began his undergraduate work at SHSU, receiving his BBA in Management from Sam Houston in May 2009. Rueben began a career in banking immediately after graduating but soon found an open position to return to campus at the Lowman Student Center in 2010. He tries to stay active at Sam Houston State, becoming advisor of the Sam Houston State Billiard Team; active member in the Association of College Unions International, participating in many staff and alumni events. In August 2011, Rueben enrolled in the MBA program at Sam Houston's Smith-Hudson College of Business and plans on completing his Masters work in the Summer of 2013.

Jack Coughlin

Assistant Operations Coordinator

JACK COUGHLIN is the Assistant Operations Supervisor in the Lowman Student Center. He graduated with a B.F.A. in Fine Arts from Sam Houston Theatre Department in 2007 and is an active participant in Community Theatre and Historical Reenactments. Although Jack has worked in jobs ranging from Obituary Writer, mechanic, gun store shipping manager, network technician, and theatrical carpenter to a manager at Target, he is excited and proud to be able to give back to the university that has enriched his life.

Gayle Bullard

Reservations Coordinator

GAYLE BULLARD has served as the Lowman Student Center Reservations Coordinator since 1993.  She supervises the LSC Information Center and especially enjoys mentoring international students.  Gayle serves on the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Initiative Committee, the Special Events Committee and is a representative for SHSU Staff Council.  Gayle is a past recipient of the Sammy Award  and currently advises Poet’s Lounge, Slam Team, and Act I.

Sara Lujan

Staff Assistant III

Sara Lujan is originally from Central America but was raised in Conroe. She obtained her Bachelor's in Business Administrations in May of 2009 from Sam Houston State University. In October 2009, she accepted the position as Staff Assistant III in the Lowman Student Center. Sara is very excited to begin her career with the university that supplied her with her college education. Sara is currently enrolled in the Executive M.B.A. program at Sam and is scheduled to graduate in August 2012. She enjoys her job very much and is very proud to be a Bearkat !

Reyna Ayala

Reyna Ayala

REYNA AYALA is a custodian at the Lowman Student Center. She is originally from Central America. She has two beautiful children, a daughter and a son. Reyna has been working for Sam Houston since 1996. In 2008, she was awarded the Staff Excellence Award for dedicated service. Reyna is "very proud to be part of the SHSU staff."

ANTONIO COSS was born in Michoacan, Mexico and grew up in Mexico City until the age of 21. He then came to the United States to begin working for a lumber company. A few years later he came to Sam Houston to become a custodian for the LSC. Tony is "very proud to be part of this great team here at the LSC."

Blanca Alvarez

BLANCA ALVAREZ is originally from Central America and she has 3 children and 5 grandchildren whom she is very close with. She has been a custodian with Sam Houston State for 9 years, 5 of which in the Lowman Student Center. Blanca very much enjoys the new faces that come and go in the LSC and is happy to be part of the traditions and culture that Sam Houston has to offer.

Lecenia Sibrian

LECENIA SIBRIAN is a proud custodian at the Lowman Student Center. She is originally from El Salvador and moved to Los Angeles in 1986. She had two sons and moved to Texas shortly after. Lecenia has been in the custodial industry for many years, previously working as a Custodial Supervisor for the Hilton Garden. She joined the LSC in 2008 and very much enjoys working at SAM.

FRANCISCA HERNANDEZ is originally from El Salvador and came to America in 1983. She has 4 children and 5 grandchildren. She has been a custodian with the Lowman Student Center since 2009 and very much enjoys working at such a great institution."

MARIA VILLATORO is part of the custodial staff at the Lowman Student Center. She is originally from El Salvador and is a happy mother of 5 children. Maria has worked for the LSC since 2009 and loves being part of Sam Houston.
