IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING
INFORMATION ETHICS

PROBLEMS ABOUND!!
  • PLAGIARISM has never been so easy or widespread.
  • HACKING continues as a concern.
  • PRIVACY violations are on the increase.
  • TRAINING for teachers and students alike is lacking
  • AUP'S are not the final solution because...
    • They are often not explained
    • They are often not enforced.
RESULTS OF TEACHER/LIBRARIAN
SURVEY
  • LM_NET
  • EDTECH
  • SHSU Library Science students
  • QUESTIONS covered...
    • Who speaks out about copyright and plagiarism? Librarians named almost exclusively.
    • Are copyright notices posted? Less than half said yes!
    • Who speaks out about software and copyright? Librarians and computer teachers.
    • Who speaks about privacy issues? More administrative concern with this issue...also librarians and computer teachers.
    • Who speaks about hacking? Computer teachers named first, then librarians.
  • LIBRARIANS are the standard bearers for most ethical issues.
  • COMPUTER TEACHERS follow as a close second.
  • ADMINISTRATORS can effectively support but concern is often lacking.
  • SOMEONE HAS TO DO IT!!!
RESULTS OF STUDENT
SURVEY
  • LACK OF UNDERSTANDING is common.
  • LACK OF CONCERN also common.
  • MANY EXPRESS defiance even when issues are explained.
WHY BOTHER?
  • STATE GUIDELINES, including TEKS, include ethical issues.
  • OUR JOB is to educate resonsible citizens
  • IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO!
