Abstract
Recently a third grade teacher requested all available resources for a unit her class of twenty students would be studying on earthquakes and volcanoes; our library had five books, one of which was fiction. The fourth grade presents a wonderful unit on the rainforest and opens it for all grade levels to come and visit, our library has four books about the rainforest. These are just two examples of the need our school has to increase our library collection. Building lifetime readers has always been a major concern of our elementary schools. Fostering a love for reading begins in our earliest kindergarten classes. The resources available to both students and staff can have a major positive impact on the education of our children.
It is the target of this program to acquire enough books to increase our collection to come closer to meeting Acceptable Texas Library Standards. Acceptable standards state that a school of our size, 639 students,, should have a collection of more than 9,000 titles. The Mauriceville Elementary Library is the main resource of literacy and research for the 711 faculty and students. Our collection should compliment and represent the ability of our students.
With the support of the Chase Trusts/Foundations we will be able
to develop our collection to meet acceptable standards. This support will
help us provide the books needed to continue participation in the many
reading incentive and reading development programs, improving the quality
of education our students can and should receive. Motivating and reaching
children, extending the typical classroom experience, by providing materials
not currently available.
Introduction
Mauriceville Elementary School Library serves students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. We are a Title I, full inclusion, public institution of learning. Our 639 students are economically and racially diverse. According to the Texas Education Agency, our student body is 31.2% economically disadvantaged.
Classrooms have a scheduled library time 30 minutes, every
other week, for storytime and lessons on research techniques. The library
is open at all other times for checking out books. Our library supports
numerous reading programs of our school, and continues to meets the literary
needs of our students and the community during the summer reading program.
Needs Assessment
Mauriceville Elementary is dedicated to educating life-long readers.
Our school is involved in many reading programs:
Our school is located in a rural community, 20 miles from the nearest public library. In order to serve our community and our students our campus has a summer reading program in which our library is open once a week, for four hours, to permit patrons to check out books for home use.
Our library collection currently stand at 6924 copies, well below the state acceptable standard of 9000 titles.
The Chase Trusts/Foundations Grant will make it possible
for our campus to increase the number of titles in our library collection
to better represent our student population. Teachers will be able to acquire
the resources needed to meet the needs of their curriculum.
The Goals Statement
Mauriceville Elementary School Library will build our
library collection to reflect acceptable library standards of 15 items
per student, or 9,000 titles. It is our hope to increase our collection
to provide our students and staff with the materials needed to achieve
and maintain a love of reading and an appreciation for our school library.
Objectives
As a result of increasing our library collection by 2076
titles our students will be provided with a larger resource base for reading
for enjoyment. Each student will also have the opportunity to develop and
enhance learning through greater access to a more diversified collection.
Plan of Operation
Mauriceville Elementary’s "Building Better Readers Book by Book" program will include the following components.
A development team working together will identify the 2076 titles that would be the most beneficial to our library collection. The team will be made up of a certified librarian, a library aide and at least one teacher. Our campus principal will review the final list of titles before the purchase is made.
To save time when the order arrives, the team will ask that the books be fully processed by the vendor(s). This will allow the books to be added to the collection as soon as possible and available to the students and staff. We will stay in contact with the vendor(s) to ensure that the order(s) are filled quickly and correctly.
New materials will be introduced to students and staff in the library during scheduled library times and a faculty meeting. Flyers will be sent home to promote our summer reading program. An add will be placed in the local newspaper to promote our summer program.
Our mission is for our library to continue being the heart
of our school. By building our library collection, we build imagination,
hopes, resources, knowledge, and community.
