The Futurekids Concept

Through exposure to a pilot program presently being tested at Anderson Elementary School in the Conroe Independent School District, I have become aware of a promising new approach to learning at the K-12 level. Futurekids has been offering an alternative to more traditional forms of public education for over fifteen years. Presently based in more than 75 nations, Futurekids is actively assisting thousands of schools in the effort to achieve technology integration as part of the learning process.

The Futurekids Technology Integration Model includes the following steps:

Professional Development. Teachers are introduced to basic skills in ten technology areas: applied technology, databases, desktop ublishing, graphics, multimedia, operating environments, programming, spreadsheets, telecommunications, and wordprocessing.

Technology Curriculum. Techers observe and initiate effective teaching practices in the computer lab while teaching students using Futurekids K-12 technology curriculum. Curricular units incorporate learning objectives, which are defined in a scope and sequence database, in the ten technology areas covered in the professional development course.

Integration Training. With the assistance of a Futurekids Certified Integration Facilitator, teachers learn to infuse technology into all academic curricula, either in the computer lab or in the classroom.
