Frequently Asked Questions
How do I request data?
There are actually several ways to request data. The easiest (and preferred) way is to click the data request link on the navigation bar to the left. However, you may also make a request via phone at 936-294-3619, e-mail at mpb005@shsu.edu or dr_rita@shsu.edu, or through campus mail (Box 2270). Data requests will usually require two to four weeks to be completed.

Where can I find data on enrollment, graduation and other statistics?
We have general statistics, such as enrollment and graduation, in many areas. The easiest area to find such information is to look in our mini-profiles reports. The data covers each fall semester for the 5 previous years. We also have a 10 year version. For more specific statistics concerning departments or other areas not covered in the mini-profiles, the registrar's report could be helpful, or you can make a data request for the needed information.

Why doesn't the IRA Office report individual data?
In most cases, it is against federal law to report individual student information. We also have an ethical obligation to not provide data which could cause harm to any group. Although this can be subjective, we try to err on the side of not releasing the data. These rules also apply to any survey data.

Can the IRA Office send out my surveys?
The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment can assist clients with survey study methodology and results analysis for paper, phone, and web surveys. Clients are responsible for obtaining survey approval (i.e., IRB, division VP, etc.); for providing personnel and covering costs to print and mail or phone, and record paper and phone surveys. Clients are also responsible for data entry of responses. The IRA Office can provide Business Reply envelopes addressed to the IRA Office, for the return of paper surveys, and can provide phone interview training. The IRA Office can also generate online surveys for clients using LimeSurvey, SHSU's online survey application program.
