Study Abroad

students

The Study Abroad program at SHSU offers the opportunity to engage in an educational and cultural learning experience. Students have the opportunity to study through one of our 17 exchange universities in 11 countries, study through an independent accredited organization, or register for faculty-led summer courses.

While abroad, students should be able to earn credit hours toward their degree. In addition, students who meet the requirements, may be eligible to receive study abroad scholarships.

TEN STEPS TO STUDYING ABROAD

NOTE: For students planning to participate in a faculty-led program, please refer to the faculty leader for application instructions.

STEP 1: Attend a Study Abroad Information session to get basic questions answered and learn about the options for studying abroad through SHSU. Click on the blue button above for the schedule of Fall 2012 information sessions.

STEP 2: Meet one-on-one with the Study Abroad Coordinator to determine your specific plan of action, especially regarding which program you will apply for, what classes you will take, and how you will pay for the program. Apply for a passport if you don't already have one.

STEP 3: Get the courses you will take while abroad approved through SHSU. You will do this through the Study Abroad office.

STEP 4: Attend the Acculturation Discussion groups to help you prepare for culture shock and other difficulties that you'll encounter while abroad.

STEP 5: Apply to the program you have decided upon.

STEP 6: Submit all the necessary application documents for SHSU Study Abroad (see below).

- SHSU Study Abroad Application

- Emergency Contact Form

- Parental Statement Form

- Proof of Health Insurance

- Student Health Travel Release Form
- Letter of Recommendation Form
- Liability Waiver

STEP 7: Once you have been accepted to the program, and have received the necessary documents, apply for your visa (if necessary) and housing (if it's not arranged by the program).

STEP 8: Register in the SMART Traveler program through the U.S. State Department, and check for any travel warnings to your destination country.

STEP 9: Purchase your plane ticket.

STEP 10: Depart!
