FAQ
Q: Is financial aid available for study abroad?
A: Yes. You will have to recompute your costs based on actual travel, housing and tuition costs to reflect the higher costs of studying abroad.
Q: Are there any other sources of financial support for studying abroad?
A: Yes, but very limited. Sam Houston State University students agreed to pay an international fee of one dollar per student per semester to fund a scholarship program. There is a separate page on how to apply, deadlines, amounts of awards, etc.
Q: Do all courses taken abroad transfer into SHSU?
A: No. Before you take courses abroad, be sure to check with your department of your major to see that the courses you intend to take will be accepted by SHSU. The Office of International Programs can assist your department in making that determination, but the final decision rests with the department of your major and
the departments that corresponds to the courses you intend to take.
Q: Why should I consider SHSU Faculty-led courses/programs?
A: SHSU sponsored courses do not have to be transferred. The courses are SHSU courses, but they are taught at a different location than the main campus or the university center. The quality is high as SHSU professors do the teaching. The cost is quite competitive as tuition is the same as taking a course at SHSU. All courses (except for foreign language, of course!) are taught in English. SHSU professors organize an itinerary that
encourages exploration of local sites.
Q: Is taking a semester or summer abroad really worth the cost and loss of income from work?
A: Yes, we believe so. Having some international travel on your resume gives you a competive advantage regardless of your major. Employers know that such an experience builds maturity, self-confidence, and an appreciation for other cultures that makes for a more responsible and sensitive employee. Living abroad may not be practical after you begin your career, and international travel opportunities may be limited due to family and other commitments. Take the time now to study abroad while you have the opportunity!
Q: Do I have to learn a foreign language in order to study abroad?
A: No. Even in non-English speaking countries there are courses offered in English. All SHSU courses (except
for foreign language) are taught in English. If you have questions, please address them to Study Abroad, Office of International Programs.
