Cultural Ambassador Program

The Office of International Programs is sponsoring a Cultural Ambassador Organization where American students are paired up with new international students to share cultural perspective and ease international students’ transition into their lives here at Sam Houston State University. The Cultural Ambassador Organization will host nine events over the course of the Fall 2013 semester to give students additional opportunities to interact and develop lasting friendships, as well as share cultural perspectives. Dates and times are subject to change.

 

Tailgating: (Aug 31st, Sept 14th, Sept 28th, Oct 26th, Nov 9th)

Tailgating at football games is a great American tradition, and way to get more people involved in learning about International Culture through craft activities like face painting, non-permanent henna tattoos, and flag stickers from all the countries of the world. This is a fun and exciting way to get involved in showing your Bearkat Spirit!

Location: Bearkat Alley, Outside Bowers Stadium

 

BBQ/Pool Party: Saturday, Sept 7th, 5pm- 7pm

A BBQ pool party is a great way to mingle while enjoying the summer sun! This event will allow students from different cultures to come together and experience a Texas BBQ amongst old friends and new ones.

Location: Grove Apartments

 

Study Tips Presentation: Monday, Sept. 9th, 12pm -1pm

Students will get the chance to meet with a Mentor from the Sam Center to learn about helpful study tips while enjoying a catered lunch. This is a great opportunity to learn how to study properly to achieve high academic goals while attending Sam Houston State University.

Location: SHSU Mentoring Center

NOTE: Only the first 15 to sign up will receive free lunch for through the Cultural Ambassador Program.

 

Career Counseling Presentation: Monday, Sept 16th, 12-1pm

A presentation by Career Services to teach the students how to build resumes and to experience what a mock interview is like in order to build the skills needed to successfully apply for jobs in the U.S.

Community Service Clean Up: Saturday, Oct 5th or 12th

This event is an opportunity for our Cultural Ambassadors to give back to our community while getting to spend time together and learn about what it means to provide community service to our Huntsville State Park. We plan on cleaning up the lake while in canoes or picking up trash along the trails.

Halloween Party: Wednesday, Oct 26th  8pm- 10pm
This event is an opportunity for the Cultural Ambassadors to showcase a few Halloween traditions to the international students through spooky stories, themed refreshments, as well as a spooky atmosphere.

El Dia de Los Muertos Holiday Celebration: Saturday, Nov. 2nd

Students will love getting together to learn about the culture and different ways to celebrate the Mexican Holiday El Dia de Los Muertos: The Day of the Dead. This will give the American and International Ambassadors a chance to see what a Mexican holiday is like and to celebrate those loved and lost through the making of arts and crafts.

Thanksgiving Holiday Dinner: Wednesday, Nov. 13th  6pm- 8pm

One thing that the majority of cultures share is the love of good food! Students will share what they have been thankful for over the past year while enjoying a home-cooked Thanksgiving feast.

Christmas Party: Thursday,  Dec. 5th, (Time)

A Christmas celebration with an emphasis on Christmas in American culture, led by the Cultural Ambassadors. The event will feature karaoke Christmas carols, cookie decorating, secret Santa, and sharing personal family holiday traditions.
