CJ636:  Computer/Technology Applications in Criminal Justice

This is a support site for CJ636, it is not the official class site.

Data Sets:

Below are links to the data that will be used in this class.  Each of these data sets covers the arrests for the sale or possession of an illegal substance from 2009 through 2011.  While coving the same time period, each data set will produce different results. The uniqueness of each data set is a kind of digital signature that I can track across assignments. Each of you have been assigned a specific data set so be sure to download and use the correct one when submitting your classwork.

These data have been generated for the purposes of this course and do not reflect actual crimes.

OffType: Offense type P = Possession, S = Sale or intent to sell.

Longitude: The decimal conversion of the Longitude of the arrest location is represented on the X axis. The numbers are negative signifying that we are West of the Prime Meridian. High numbers to the right, lower to the left.

Latitude: The decimal conversion of Latitude of the arrest location is represented on the Y axis.  Numbers are positive, high numbers represent North and low numbers South.

Female:  While most are able to figure this out on their own, the value of 0 means “no,” indicating male and a value of 1 indicates female.

Race/Eth:  Race or Ethnicity codes where 1 = Black, 2 = White, and 3 = Hispanic.  (Apologies to the “Others” these are excluded for simplicity and are a very small number in Huntsville.)

DOB:  Date of birth.

ArrDate: Date of arrest (or maybe date the person became a pirate).

Project Videos (zipped):

All active project demonstrations are avilable for download. They are in zipped format and organized by project. Note the size of the zip files and prepare for a lengthy download time. Once you have downloaded a project, you will need to unzip it. By hovering your mouse over a link in the electronic syllabus (Adobe Acrobat document), you will see the address of the file that the link would call. Note the name of the linked folder and file and locate these in the unziped demo folder. Drill down to the folder containing the media files and double-click on the html file. A window will open and a Flash video will load and play shortly thereafter.
