Post Tenure
Review in the Texas University System
American Association for Higher Education
New Pathways II Project
This project is funded in part by the American Association for Higher Education
New Pathways II Project and is designed to compile useful, comparative
information on the Post Tenure Review (PTR) process as it is developing on the
various campuses of the Texas State University System. The data we are
collecting focus on both general perceptions about the idea of PTR as well as
on specific perceptions about the particular PTR processes that have been
developed in each of the universities in the system. Data from faculty
are being collected through the use of both a "postal survey" and
interviews. Interview data are also being collected from academic
administrators and other key participants in the legislative process that led
to the system wide implementation of development of PTR procedures.
This page will serve as the
"home-page" for the project and will include links to summary reports
and other information related to the study. It will be updated
periodically (last update
June17, 2002).
If you have any particular
comments and/or would like to more fully discuss the project, you can do so by
contacting any members of the research team listed below. We collectively
express our continued gratitude to the AAHE (particularly Senior Associate Dr.
Christine M. Licata our New Pathways II "contact person") and Dr.
David E. Payne, Vice President for Academic Affairs SHSU for providing
financial support for this project. We are also grateful to all interview
and "postal survey" respondents who have participated in the project.

interview instruments and collect the data used for our study.
"Postal Survey"
of Faculty Perceptions and Experiences with PTR
The survey instrument
available at the above link includes five different sections, each of which
includes both "forced choice" questions as well as
"open-ended" questions designed to provide respondents with an
opportunity to explain their particular feelings concerning PTR. Section
1 focuses on thoughts about tenure in general and the respondent's routine
annual review process. Section 2 includes items relating to perceptions
about the motivations of those who established the requirement that PTR be
developed and Section 3 asks questions about what would constitute the
"ideal" PTR process. Sections 4 and 5 include questions about the
actual PTR procedures being used in the respondent's department with particular
emphasis on the benefits, problems, and personal experiences with the existing
procedures. We also ask respondents for a variety of
"demographic" information that will enable us to see whether
particular groups of respondents have unique experiences and/or ideas about
PTR.
The survey instrument was
sent through campus mail to all tenured and tenure-track members of the faculty
at the following universities:
