- Paul Ruffin, 2009 Texas Poet Laureate, a Texas State University System Regents’ Professor and Distinguished Professor of English, who has published more than 24 books, 800 poems and numerous essays and reviews, and was named one of the state’s top 10 poets by the Texas Commission on the Arts
- Melissa Morphew, associate professor and well-published poet, whose poems have received such national awards as the Cecil J. Hackney Literary Award, the Randall Jarrell International Poetry Prize and the W.B. Yeats Society Award for Poetry
- John de Castro, behavioral researcher and dean of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, who has written many articles, including, "A Plan for Eating In the Real World"

You can be a part of award-winning groups, such as:
- SHSU Debate Team, which competed in 10 International Public Debate Association tournaments, winning three and amassing 70 individual and team trophies before ending the 2009 season with a fourth-in-the-nation finish
