EDUCATIONAL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Forensic Science, or a Natural/Physical Science related field. Minimum of three (3) years previous experience in forensic science required. Or a combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities.
NATURE & PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Performs moderately complex (journey-level) forensic science work. Work involves conducting laboratory tests, analyses, classifications, comparisons, and identifications of evidence in controlled substances and/or toxicology sections of the laboratory; interpreting analytical and instrumental results; preparing reports and testifying as an expert witness in court. Active participation in the quality assurance program.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives minimal supervision from the Forensic Science Laboratory Manager. Trains other laboratory employees as assigned. Prepares casework and receives, catalogs, and files evidence. Conducts microscopic/visual examination or chemical analyses on evidence. Prepares reports on examinations and testifies in court when necessary. Participates in proficiency testing and the quality assurance program. Assists with the maintenance of laboratory facilities/equipment, technical troubleshooting and the development of new analytical procedures. Assistance with staff training, research directed at improvement of current methods of analysis and the validation of the proposed improvements. Assist laboratory manager in quality assurance and quality control matters as directed by laboratory manager and/or director. Performs other related duties as assigned.
OTHER SPECIFICATIONS:
Experience with forensic analysis, including but not limited to chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques is required. Knowledge of forensic laboratory accreditation standards and proven ability with respect to method development and validation. Computer literacy and good communication skills are necessary. Candidates that have testified and been qualified as a scientific expert are given priority.
