EDUCATIONAL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Forensic Science, or a Natural Science is required. No experience required. One (1) year of experience in research for a particular field involved with a grant or project would be helpful. Experience in analytical methodology such as gas chromatography (GC-MS) and gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis is desired. Or a combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities.
NATURE & PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Involves conducting laboratory tests, analyses, classifications, comparisons, and identifications of physical evidence from crime scenes; recording or otherwise making records of analytical and instrumental results. Assist the forensic scientist in testing of evidence or other duties as directed by the laboratory director and/or the laboratory manager.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May supervise lower level non-professional clerks and staff or student assistants. Work is performed under general supervision. Assist Forensic Scientist in the preparation of sample for analysis. May assist in the microscopic/visual examination or chemical analyses on evidence; preparation of biological specimens for analysis by GC/MS or other methods. Prepares and validates reagent stocks and standards as needed. Maintains log entry data on instrument repair, maintains and tunes instruments as needed and validates proper function. Conduct screening tests on biological materials submitted for analysis for ethanol content, drug and/or drug metabolites(s). Documents the procedure or analytical details in laboratory notes or documentation consistent with laboratory policy. May be required to testify in court and participate in proficiency and/or competency testing. Performs other related duties as assigned.
