Assistant/Associate Professor- Tenure Track

Degree Requirements:

Ph.D. in mass communication or related field required; advanced ABD's will be considered.

Experience Requirements:

The Mass Communication Department seeks to hire a dynamic teacher-scholar with research and teaching interest in broadcast production and broadcast journalism. We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach news production, videography, non-linear editing, lighting, and scriptwriting. The successful candidate may also have opportunity to teach in the MCM digital media masters program, scheduled to begin in Fall 2011. The successful candidate will also provide mentoring and support for students in the creation of original media content for the student television station.

Sam Houston State is located in historic Huntsville, situated between Houston and Dallas, at the boundary between the Piney Woods region of East Texas and the Prairies and Lakes region of Central Texas. The campus is 35 miles north of the The Woodlands and other Houston suburbs, granting students and faculty access to a broad range of recreational, cultural, and professional opportunities in the Houston area. One of the most rapidly growing universities in Texas, Sam Houston State University has an enrollment of approximately 16,500 students and a faculty of 650. SHSU has been recognized as a "Doctoral Research University" by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education and offers master's and doctoral degrees in 48 different program areas.

The Mass Communication Department is an energetic and progressive department currently serving 650 undergraduate majors in print and broadcast journalism, media production, and public relations. Housed in the Dan Rather Communications Building, the department is home to an award-winning student newspaper, 24-hour student radio station, and student operated community television facility. The department expects to launch a master's degree in digital media in Fall 2011.

Usual Duties:

The successful candidate will teach courses in their area of concentration; advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students; and engage in service, scholarship, and publication at a level appropriate for a tenure track position.
