HEALTH EDUCATION GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
GOALS
- The HEP will
provide quality undergraduate and graduate degrees generating
effective health education specialist to serve in school,
community, corporate, and clinical settings.
- The HEP will
offer educational and informational resources to schools
and communities.
- The HEP will
promote healthy lifestyles among students, faculity, and
staff at Sam Houston State University.
- The HEP will
support and encourage professional development among students
and faculity.
GOAL A
The HEP will
provide quality undergraduate and graduate degrees generating
effective health education specialist to serve in school, community,
corporate, and clinical settings.
OBJECTIVE A.1.
Graduates will complete an internship demonstrating successful application
of
knowledge acquired in the program.
OBJECTIVE A.2.
Graduates will demonstrate the skills and competencies needed for effective
health educators as identified in A Framework for the Development of Competency-based
Curricula for Entry Level Health Educators. (National Task Force on the Preparation
and Practice of Health Educators, 1985) :
- Assessing individual and community needs for health education;
- Planning effective health education programs;
- Implementing health education programs;
- Evaluating effectiveness of health education programs;
- Coordinating provision of health education services;
- Acting as a resource person in health education;
- Communicating health and health education needs, concerns,
and resources.
OBJECTIVE A.3.
Graduates will operate as effective health educators in professional settings.
OBJECTIVE A.4.
The faculty and administration will provide the necessary instructional materials,
equipment, and facilities.
OBJECTIVE A.5.
The HEP will provide necessary
health education personnel for quality delivery of the cirriculum while maintaining
optimal faculty/student ratios.
GOAL B
The HEP will
offer educational and informational resources to schools and
communities.
OBJECTIVE B.1.
Faculty and students will serve as speakers, consultants, presenters, and
facilitators for schools and state and local health agencies.
OBJECTIVE B.2.
Faculty and students will provide leadership in health promotion and disease
prevention activities at the local, state, and national level.
GOAL C
The HEP will promote healthy
lifestyles among students, faculity, and staff at Sam
Houston State University.
OBJECTIVE C.1.
The HEP will offer courses
that promote healthy lifestyles to Sam Houston State University students:
HED 166-Lifestyles
and Wellness;
HED 230-Red Cross
First Aid;
HED 280-Drug
Use and Abuse;
HED 385-Safety
Education; and,
HED 390-Family
Life and Human Sexuality,
HED 470-AIDS
OBJECTIVE C.2.
Workshops and seminars on special topics/issues will be offered to SHSU health
students.
OBJECTIVE C.3.
Faculty and students will provide leadership and service in health promotion
activities across the campus.
OBJECTIVE C.4.
Faculty will offer services in health screenings and referrals to students,
faculty,
and staff.
GOAL D
The HEP will support and
encourage professional development among students
and faculity.
OBJECTIVE D.1.
Faculty will serve as role models and mentors to students in professional
practice through active membership in professional organizations, publications,
research, and community service.
OBJECTIVE D.2.
Faculty will support and promote a local chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma (national
health education honor society).
OBJECTIVE D.3.
Faculty will promote excellence in health education by publicly recognizing
outstanding students.
