Welcome to the exciting world of Residence Life at Sam Houston State University! We provide the perfect environment for an on-campus living experience!
All 26 of our residence halls and apartments provide economical and convenient living for students. We house approximately 3300 Bearkats, providing one of the widest varieties of living options in this region of the country.
We are confident that we can live up to your expectations of on-campus student living and are thrilled to be a part of your education experience!
Students who currently live in the residence halls and wish to apply for housing for Summer 2014 or the 2014-2015 Academic Year, will be able to apply for these terms beginning in February, 2014.
On October 1, 2013 the Housing Portal will open and we will begin taking applications for the Spring 2014 term and Academic Year 2014-2015. Students will need to submit a $200 deposit with application.
To assist in the transition from life at home to life on the SHSU campus, all "beginning" first year students are required to live in university residence halls and participate in a meal plan during their first year (normally includes Fall and Spring semesters).
A "beginning" first year student (including a first year transfer student) is defined as a student who has graduated from high school the previous year to attending Sam Houston State University. For example, if you graduate from high school between September 2012 - June 2013, you are required to live on-campus Fall 2013 and Spring 2014.
Students may request an exception to this policy by completing a Request for Waiver of the First Year Required Housing and Meal Plan Policy and submitting the proper documentation.
Residence Hall Tours
Visitors are encouraged to tour our residence hall showrooms. Tours are given weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm. Large groups (10 or more) are encouraged to schedule tours in advance by calling (936) 294-1812.
The Department of Residence Life no longer assigns room spaces. Students now have the opportunity to select the specific room where they wish to reside and can make room changes until shortly before move-in. Room selection timeslots are determined by the date SHSU receives the student application and deposit, as well as verification of bacterial meningitis vaccination.
Students also have the opportunity to find roommates using the housing portal. Confirmed roommates will receive a common date of priority (average of both dates of deposit) to enter the portal to select a room.
To provide each resident with a convenient, well-maintained, and safe living environment at a reasonable cost while fostering learning by setting and upholding community standards, providing community activities, and encouraging campus connections and opportunities to enhance the student's overall experience of university life.
