Directions to the
2003 Veterans Day Commemorations
Morning Event -- 9:00 a.m. at the Sam Houston Woodland Home, Sam Houston
Memorial Museum on 19th Street West of Sam Houston Ave.
- If you are driving from the SHSU campus, travel to the corner of Sam Houston Avenue and
19th Street. Turn onto 19th Street (this is a T intersection allowing only a turn to
the west). There will be a wooded area set off by a stone wall on your right. This
is part of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. Continue on 19th Street for a few blocks until
you see a large white building with a parking area in front of it. This is the
Walker Education Center. If you do not know where the Woodland home is located, please
enter the Walker Education Center and request directions in the Gift Shop.
- If you are traveling on I-45 take exit 114. (Exit 116 is currently under massive
construction & will take you forever; exit 112 will get you there, but you'll need a
lot of faith.)
- If coming from the north:
You're going south on the west side of I-45; you want to be going north on the other side
of the freeway. Turn left onto the bridge, cross the bridge & turn left again onto the
feeder road going north. Continue on the feeder road to 19th Street (Ward's Furniture is
on the corner.)
- If coming from the south:
Continue on the feeder road to 19th Street (Ward's Furniture is on the corner.)
- Turn right onto 19th. Continue about 8 blocks to Avenue O.
- Up ahead on the left is the Walker Education Center.
- Turn left into the Education Center and find a spot to park. If you do not know
where the Woodland home is located, please enter the Walker Education Center and request
directions in the Gift Shop.
In case of rain, the morning talk will be held in the auditorium
in the Walker Education Center.
Evening Event -- 7:00 p.m. in the James S. Olson Auditorium, Academic Building
4, SHSU Campus. This building is at the corner of Bowers Blvd. and Avenue I.
- If you're traveling from Interstate 45: Take Exit 116;
Follow Hwy 190 East; turn right at Courthouse onto Sam Houston Avenue; continue on this
road until you reach Bowers Boulevard; turn left onto Bowers Blvd. There is parking
available in several lots on your left and right; all parking is free after 5:00 pm.
If you continue down Bowers Blvd from Sam Houston Avenue, the first stop light is
at the corner of Avenue I and Academic Building 4 is on your left. When you enter
the building, the James S. Olson Auditorium is to your right.
- If you're traveling from the East
(Trinity/Livingston/Nacogdoches): Follow Hwy 190 West; take a left at Courthouse
onto Sam Houston Avenue; continue on this road until you reach Bowers Boulevard; turn left
onto Bowers Blvd. There is parking available in several lots on your left and right;
all parking is free after 5:00 pm. If you continue down Bowers Blvd from Sam Houston
Avenue, the first stop light is at the corner of Avenue I and Academic Building 4 is on
your left. When you enter the building, the James S. Olson Auditorium is to your
right.
- If you're traveling from the West, you'll come in on Hwy
30; Cross over Interstate 45 and it turns into Hwy 190 East; Follow Hwy 190 East; Right at
Courthouse onto Sam Houston Avenue; continue on this road until you reach Bowers
Boulevard; turn left onto Bowers Blvd. There is parking available in several lots on
your left and right; all parking is free after 5:00 pm. If you continue down Bowers
Blvd from Sam Houston Avenue, the first stop light is at the corner of Avenue I and
Academic Building 4 is on your left. When you enter the building, the James S. Olson
Auditorium is to your right.
