Directions to the Veterans' Day Commemorations
Morning Event -- 9:00 a.m. at the Gillaspie Memorial Marker (the corner of 9th
Street and Avenue I, which is also known as Spur 94).
- If you are driving from campus, head downtown on Sam Houston Avenue until you get to
11th Street (this will place you next to the Courthouse). Turn right onto 11th street and
continue on this road until you see Avenue I (Spur 94) on your left. Turn left onto Avenue
I and continue until you reach 9th Street. In front of you is the Oakwood Cemetery.
The Sam Houston grave site is directly in front of you, and the Gillaspie Memorial Marker
is to your left, kitty-corner from where you are now. This is where the 9:00 a.m.
talk will be held. You may park along 9th Street.
- If you are traveling on I-45 take exit 114. (Exit 116 is currently under massive
construction & will take you forever; exit 112 will get you there, but you'll need a
lot of faith.)
- If coming from the north:
You're going south on the west side of I-45; you want to be going north on the other side
of the freeway. Turn left onto the bridge, cross the bridge & turn left again onto the
feeder road going north. Continue on the feeder road to 19th Street (Ward's Furniture is
on the corner.)
- If coming from the south:
Continue on the feeder road to 19th Street (Ward's Furniture is on the corner.)
- Turn right onto 19th Street
- 19th Street will end at a T intersection where it meets with Sam Houston Avenue
- Turn left onto Sam Houston Avenue.
- Continue on Sam Houston Ave. until you reach 11th Street
- Turn right onto 11th Street (also known as Highway 30)
- Continue on 11th for a few blocks until you see Avenue I (also known as Spur 94) on your
left
- Turn left onto Avenue I until you it looks like the road ends at the cemetery.
- This is the corner of Avenue I and 9th Street. In front of you is the Oakwood Cemetery.

Evening Event -- 7:00 p.m. at the Katy and E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center
at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, on 19th Street West of Sam Houston Ave.
- If you are driving from the SHSU campus, travel to the corner of Sam Houston Avenue and
19th Street. Turn onto 19th Street (this is a T intersection allowing only a turn to
the west). There will be a wooded area set off by a stone wall on your right. This
is part of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. Continue on 19th Street for a few blocks until
you see a large white building with a parking area in front of it. This is the
Walker Education Center. Please enter through the front doors and continue straight ahead
into the auditorium.

- If coming from the south:
Continue on the feeder road to 19th Street (Ward's Furniture is on the corner.)
- Turn right onto 19th. Continue about 8 blocks to Avenue O.
- Up ahead on the left is the Walker Education Center.
- Turn left into the Education Center and find a spot to park. As you enter the Walker
Education Center you may continue straight ahead into the auditorium where the talk will
be held.
Maps of Huntsville are available via the Walker County Chamber of Commerce and
the Sam Houston Memorial Museum websites.
