The Master of Arts program in History at Sam Houston State University serves students interested in secondary teaching as well as those aspiring toward a Ph.D. At present, more than 162 graduate students are pursuing the degree, which may be taken entirely online or through a combination of online courses and traditional classroom seminars in Huntsville or The Woodlands. The Department of History has 22 full-time faculty members with strong records in teaching and publishing in a wide variety of fields. Popular subject areas include: military history, early and modern American history, early and modern European and World history as well as the history of women and Hispanic borderlands. |

| Degree Plans |
Master of Arts, Plan I. This option calls for 30 semester hours in History, including 6 semester hours of credit for the thesis. The thesis is a substantial piece of written work based on primary and secondary research. Openings for the Plan I option are limited, and approval of the department chair is required. Master of Arts, Plan II. This option is intended for those who prefer not to write a thesis. Instead, students complete 36 semester hours of coursework in History and write an article-length paper in a capstone research seminar. |
