Background - in 1889, on the 10th anniversary of the school, the Sam Houston State Teachers College faculty and students commemorated Sam's birthday and Texas Independence Day by marching down the hill to the grave in Oakwood cemetery on the other side of 11th Street (Hwy 30). The march ended in 1930s, as a result of the depression.
In 2001 the Webb History Society restarted the tradition with six students and one lonely flag. The following year there were 12 students, and the President and his wife, this past year, there were students in historic costumes, and about 60 marchers. This year we hope to top that number!
A number of our loyal administrators will be marching, including Dr. Gaertner, Dr. Payne, and Dr. Thibodeaux, plus hundreds of students. We'll look forward to seeing you there.
