Welcome to the SHSU History Department!

With 22 full-time faculty members, 162 graduate students, and approximately 3,800 undergraduates in our courses every semester, we are proud to report that History is one of the strongest departments at Sam Houston State University. Offering the B.A. and M.A. degrees, the department is committed to teaching excellence, curriculum innovation, and faculty research. Since 1990, faculty members have written 35 books, as well as, dozens of articles in professional journals.

Most SHSU students focus on the history of the United States, the British Isles, or Europe. The Department of History also regularly offers courses in African, Asian, and Latin American history.

Undergraduate and graduate students interested in a museum career have the option of developing an individualized, cooperative internship between the Department of History and the Sam Houston Memorial Museum.

The graduate program serves students interested in secondary teaching as well as those planning to earn the Ph.D. in history. Most secondary school teachers choose the 36 semester credit-hour, non-thesis option for their master's degree, while individuals who intend to pursue the Ph.D. often apply for the 30-semester credit-hour, thesis program.
