Course Description
This web based course is a survey of American military history from 1763
to the present. The course will study the interrelationships of warfare,
technology and society in American history. The course will focus on such
questions as how changing "styles" of warfare, the composition
of the military establishment (militias, citizen armies, paid professionals,
mercenaries), and the transformations in military technology have impacted
upon state and society. Conversely, it will also investigate how political
and societal changes have influenced the nature of warfare in American history.
In taking this course you will conduct yourself through thirty-two web assignments
in which you will study various themses and periods in American military

Web Assignments
Each of the thirty-two web assignments in the course will deal with a
particular period or theme in American Military History. In each assignment
you will be called upon to read the web documents and sites. You
will then compose one essay from questions raised from the main text readings
and/or the supplementary sources and sites. You are expected to express
your reaction and answer each question in an essay between 500 and 700 words
in length. Each reaction paper will be worth 50 points for a total of 1600
points or toward the course grade. For a detailed description of each assignment

Examinations
An examination will be presented to you upon your completion of eight
assignments. Each examination will consist of one essay section in which
you will be called upon to write two essays from a field of five questions
based upon the main text readings. Each essay section will count 100 points
toward the course grade. There will also be an identification section in
which you will be called upon to identify and state the historical significance
of five out of ten items in one paragraph for each item. Each identification
section will be worth 50 points toward the course grade. In addition you
will be called upon to complete a mulitple choice section consisting of
twenty-five questions based upon quotations, images and other features found
in the supplementary source web assignments. Each multiple choice section
will count 50 points toward the course grade. The four examinations worth
200 points each will count toward one third of the course grade. For for
