I am a Professor of History at Sam Houston State University. I received my college education at San Jose State College (now University) and Stanford University.  I finished my Ph.D. in 1983 at Stanford. I have worked for the Hoover Institution as a library specialist and have taught at the college and university level at Menlo College, the University of Nevada--Reno, New Mexico State University, Norwich University, and for the past nineteen years here at Sam Houston State University.  My areas or research interest are geographically Southeastern Europe, Byzantium, Russia, and the Middle East and the thematically military and diplomatic history. I teach a number of courses in these fields, as well as surveys in Ancient  and World history.

I also serve as Vice-President of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER).  I am one of the organizers of the  International Conference on Ancient and Modern History, sponsored by the Athens Institute for Education and Research every December. I am also one of the organizers of the International Conference on Philosophy, held every June.
