Sam Houston is one of only two state universities in Texas that offers the MFA in Dance. Although the program is soundly based in performance and choreography, each MFA candidate is encouraged to pursue his or her own dance aspirations. Thesis emphases have ranged from modern and jazz dance performances to graphic art interpretation; from metaphysical Native American theorties of time to musical theatre. Experimentation in lighting, set installations, and technical theatre is available because the SHSU Dance Program has its own dance theatre. Students from the MFA Program are teaching in universities, running dance companies, dancing professionally, and pursuing a variety of careers in dance. It is a 60-hour program that generally takes 3 years, depending on the amount of teaching and other commitments you may have.
