Thank you for your interest in graduate English at SHSU. We offer an MA that qualifies students for junior college teaching, further graduate studies, enhanced secondary teaching and, of course, polite dinner conversation. With about sixty students in various stages of their degrees, the English program is just large enough for diversity, just small enough for an intimacy between students and faculty that one does not often find at larger research institutions. Our standard MA degree requires 36 hours of graduate English. To ensure that those who hold the MA in English from SHSU know their subject well, we require that students take a broad range of classes in English literature and language. While the MA program takes this generalist's approach to English, students may also pursue a creative writing emphasis.
