The First-Year Experience program at Sam Houston State University is pleased to announce the arrival of the campus-wide common reader program.  Bearkats Read to Succeed, SHSU’s common reader program, serves as the first academic experience for incoming freshmen. The book is used in a variety of classes like ENG 164 and 165 and sets a theme for SAM 136: Introduction to Collegiate Studies.  Bearkats Read to Succeed is designed to introduce freshmen to the power and joys of reading, not simply as a means of gaining knowledge, but also as a way to strengthen emotional connectedness, to lessen isolation, to explore alternate realities, and to challenge the established order.

As a parent, you may want to read the book so that you'll be fully informed of what our students are reading and studying. Encourage your student to complete the reading before they arrive on campus. If they do so, they will be far ahead of other students who have not read the book.

If you would like to purchase your own copy of Affluenza, Barnes & Noble University Bookstore has it available.
