Mentoring Programs
What is it?

The Faculty - Staff / Student Mentor Program is an initiative that matches Mentors (faculty, staff or administrators) with first-time freshman students. Mentors contact the students when they arrive on campus, welcome them to the community and serve as their mentor during their first year on campus. Ideally, friendships will develop in such a way that students feel comfortable in approaching their mentors for help with academic, social and personal concerns.

For more information on this program please contact the Dean of Students' Office at 936.294.1785.

The SAMentors program helps freshman and transfer students of color make successful social and academic adjustments to college; however, ALL students are welcome to participate. Mentors are sophomore, junior, and senior students, and protégés are first-year or transfer students. Mentors and protégés typically have friendships that last throughout college and beyond. This program has one group social per month and a banquet at the end of the semester.

To become a protégé, contact Student Activities, Lowman Student Center Suite 328, 936.294.3861 or sad@shsu.edu.
