Welcome to Sam Houston State University! This is your first issue of The Know, which is a monthly newsletter for first year students. This newsletter will be full of helpful hints to make this year the best it can be. We will keep you updated on upcoming events, tell you where to go and what to do if you need help, and give you tips for sucess! The First-Year Experience offers many things that can help make the first year easier.

We started off on August 18th with New Student Convocation to welcome you to SHSU. It was so fun and motivating! Dr. Ben Welch shared his "10 Proven Keys to Success" and helped everyone get excited about the school year. | S.W.A.A.T- Six Weeks of Alcohol Awareness Training |
This year S.W.A.A.T., sponsored by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Initiative, started on August 28 and is going full swing during the months of September and October. These six weeks will be packed with fun and informational events about the affects of alcohol on college students.There will be many opportunities to earn free prizes at these events as well. Please check the schedule of events or contact Michelle Lovering at 936.294.4347 for more information.
Here are a few interesting facts that happened this month in the past. These facts were taken from The History Place.
September 8, 1900 - A hurricane with winds of 120 mph struck Galveston, Texas, killing over 8,000 persons, making it the worst disaster in U.S. history. The hurricane and tidal wave that followed destroyed over 2,500 buildings.
September 18, 1947 - The U.S. Air Force was established as a separate military service.
September 22, 1862 - President Abraham Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves in territories held by Confederates as of January 1, 1863.
September 26, 1774 - American folk legend Johnny Appleseed (1774-1845) was born in Leominster, Massachusetts (as John Chapman). For 40 years, he traveled through Ohio, Indiana and into Illinois, planting orchards. He was a friend to wild animals and was regarded as a "great medicine man" by Native Americans.

No Cook Recipe for Residence Hall Living:
Microwave Frito Pie |

You will need:
1 bag of Fritos
1 can of chili
sour cream
grated cheese
chopped onions
Heat chili in bowl in microwave, pour over Fritos, and add sour cream, chopped onions or grated cheese if desired.
Microwaves can be found in the lobby of your residence hall.
September 3rd is Labor Day, no classes!
September 5th is the 12th class day and the last day to drop a class without a "Q" and receive 100% refund. |
