| Getting advised, why is it so important? |
It is only October and already people are telling me I need to get advised. Why so early? What’s the big deal? Sophomore SAM Center student assistant, Amy Gleason, says the reason she gets advised is, “I need to make sure I am on the right track and be sure I have the right classes left so that I can graduate on time.”
There are so many reasons to make sure you get advised, and get advised EARLY. The number one reason is to avoid those long lines at the SAM Center towards the end of the semester. All freshmen must get advised so that they can register for the upcoming semester. Vanessa Silva, another SAM Center student assistant, says, “If you to get advised early, you can register early, and get the classes and class times you really want. Some classes have limited seats, or are only offered certain semesters; I want to be sure I can get into those classes.”
The SAM Center advises people of every classification and every major, are always willing to help keep you on the right track, and answer any questions you have along the way. If you have more specific questions or need more information on your major or classes, you can also talk the department of your major.
Call the SAM Center at 294-4444 for more information. |

Tell your parents and family members to come on out to the Bearkat County Fair! Parent/family weekend is October 27-29 and is a great opportunity to show your family and friends from home what you’ve been up to at SHSU. Showing your parents where your classes are located, who you hang out with, and how clean you keep your room are fun experiences and will help them feel more at ease while you are away at college. The Dean of Students' office has a lot of fun things planned for parents like setting up a time to have coffee with the administration, having a chance to join the Parents Association, and an opportunity to play golf at Raven Nest Golf Course for the price of a student. You can also show your parents the campus and how you walk up that notorious hill (uphill both ways of course), let them meet your roommate, and give them a taste of Bearkat spirit at the game on Saturday. Bring the whole family dressed in orange for some food and fun at Bearkat Alley, and then stay to watch those Bearkats eat up McNeese State! So, bring the camera, put Dad in an orange wig, and have some fun at the Bearkat County Fair! |
