Words of Wisdom from Been There Should've Done That

book

Need some tips for starting a new semester? Take some hints from the award winning book, Been There Should’ve Done That by Suzette Tyler.

“My brother, who’s not in college, works 40 or 50 hours a week at his job. When I’m sick of studying I try to ask myself if I’ve put in that many hours. It’s definitely a reality check. You need to think of school as your job." -Junior, Engineering, Notre Dame

“Don’t believe everything you read. I spent the summer taking a course I absolutely hated only to find out that the requirement had been dropped! You need to talk with advisors on a regular basis. The printed requirements for majors aren’t always up to date, or they’ll accept something other that what’s listed." –Graduate, Michigan State University

“Summer is a good time to take difficult courses. Instructors are more relaxed, classes are smaller, and the competition is less. It’s perfect for taking labs." Junior, Engineering, Notre Dame

Presidents' Day

Mt RushmoreThis year Presidents’ Day falls on February 19th, the third Monday in February. Everyone has heard of Presidents' Day before, but what is the significance behind this holiday? The holiday started out as a simple celebration of George Washington’s birthday in the last year of his Presidency, February 22nd, 1796. Smaller celebrations recognizing Washington’s Birthday took place before he was president, honoring his role as a General in the American Revolutionary war and his introduction of the Purple Heart, the first military badge of merit for a common soldier. The country continued to celebrate Washington’s Birthday and in 1885, February 22nd was declared a holiday for all federal workers. It was changed in 1971 to the third Monday in February. Abraham Lincoln, another February born President, had a country-wide observance of his birthday on February 12, 1865, the year after he was assassinated; some states still observe his birthday as an official holiday. Although his birthday was never declared an official federal holiday, most people use this holiday to honor George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, as well as all of the men who have served our great country as President.
