What is a Freshman Learning Community?
Simply put, a learning community is a community where people learn from each other. In an academic setting a learning community is a structure in which classes are linked so that groups of students enroll in courses together. The SHSU course-based freshman learning communities pair 3 courses in the fall and 3 courses in the spring around an academic major or student interest theme. Activities are planned that complement the coursework: field trips, service, book forums and other outings.
The Freshman Learning Community structure is a simple recipe to produce support networks for academic, personal, and social success. Please choose from among the eight course-based learning communities below.
The eight Freshman Learning Community cohorts for 2012-2013 are:
Agricultural Sciences
Business
Education
Exploring Careers & Majors
Criminal Justice
Pre-Law
Leadership
Writing and Reading
Each cohort will be limited to a maximum of 25 students.
Student applications will be reviewed for acceptance into this program.
If you are interested in applying to be in

This is a program which provides incoming freshmen students the opportunity to take classes with other students who live in the same residence hall. This group of students also has a planned program of activities designed to enhance academics as well as provide a positive social atmosphere. BLC was implemented as a joint effort of the Department of Residence Life, the Division of Academic Affairs, and the Division of Student Services.
